May Event: Gardner Lecture and Dinner Meeting
Recap: ASCE Philadelphia April 2024 Multi-Topic Dinner Meeting
DVGI hosted its April meeting on Thursday, April 11th, as part of ASCE Philadelphia's monthly meeting. The evening included three technical sessions, including one hosted by DVGI. Brandon Buschmeier, P.E. (Menard USA, Media, PA) presented on "Rigid Inclusion Support for the Potomac Yard Metro Station," reviewing how Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC's) were used to construct a new rail station in tricky soil conditions near Alexandria, VA. Another geotechnical highlight came during SEI's technical session, which featured a presentation on the I-95 Tacony Viaduct. Mike Giovannitti, P.E. (A.G.E.S., King of Prussia, PA) added to an insightful presentation on the structural aspects of the viaduct design by contributing a detailed review of how the results of Osterberg cell load testing on the project resulted in field modifications to large diameter drilled shafts.
DVGI will close out its 2023-24 slate of dinner meetings with its annual Gardner Lecture. The lecture will be presented by Jeffrey C. Evans, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, of Bucknell University on "Slurry Walls and In Situ Mixing for Construction of Vertical Barriers." He will present current developments in the geotechnical understanding and implementation of the various means and methods of constructing a subsurface vertical barrier of low permeability. Dr. Evans is Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA, and is currently a Principal Geotechnical Engineer at Parsons.
